Hex Nut – SAE J995 Grades 2, 5 and 8
A SAE hex nut is used with inch-threaded bolts and rods. SAE J995 defines strength grades for steel nuts, which must be paired with the bolt grade and assembly requirements.

The SAE hex nut secures components through a removable threaded connection. It is used in machinery, vehicles, supports and maintenance involving inch-series fasteners.
Technical features
SAE J995 covers grades 2, 5 and 8. Grade sets proof-load and hardness requirements; proof loading checks nut capacity without thread damage. It does not equal the mating bolt’s SAE J429 tensile strength. Dimensions follow ASME B18.2.2 and unified UNC or UNF threads follow ASME B1.1.
Applications and assembly
It is paired with SAE J429 bolts according to the required grade. Nut proof load is a selection criterion and should not be confused with bolt tensile strength. Correct engagement requires matching diameter and pitch.
