A490 and A490M Heavy Hex Structural Bolt – ASTM F3125/F3125M
The A490 and A490M heavy hex bolt is used in structural steel connections. ASTM F3125/F3125M contains the current requirements for this grade. Its head and thread length are designed for use within a structural assembly with compatible nuts and washers.

The A490 and A490M structural bolt is manufactured from heat-treated alloy steel to join steel plates and sections. It offers higher tensile strength than grade A325; its selection and coating must follow the project specification. The A490 and A490M designations identify the inch and metric series, respectively.
Technical features
ASTM F3125/F3125M: inch-series A490 specifies 150–173 ksi tensile strength; metric A490M specifies 1040–1210 MPa. These values are not allowable joint loads. ASME B18.2.6 is the inch-series dimensional reference. Nuts, washers and coating must meet the specified assembly requirements.
Applications and assembly
Used in snug-tightened or pretensioned joints according to the design. Installation method and inspection determine how the connection is verified. Surface finish affects lubrication and assembly behavior during tightening.
