Direct Tension Indicator (DTI) Washer – ASTM F959
The ASTM F959 DTI washer helps verify structural bolt pretension through controlled compression of its protrusions. It is used in A325 and A490 connections requiring tightening inspection during erection.

A DTI is a direct tension indicating washer. Its protrusions deform as bolt clamping force increases; the remaining gap provides a way to check pretension using the manufacturer’s inspection method.
Technical features
Standard: ASTM F959/F959M. Selection is based on bolt diameter and grade. Visual-indicating models contain material that is expelled during compression; this feature is not present in every DTI.
Applications and assembly
Used in steel structures, bridges and assemblies requiring inspection of pretensioned joints. Placement and inspection must follow the procedure for the specific indicator and bolting arrangement.
