Self-Tapping Screw
A self-tapping screw forms its mating thread in a pilot hole to secure sheet metal, housings and fittings. It suits assemblies without a machined thread or access for a separate nut.

A self-tapping screw creates the fastening thread as it advances into a prepared hole. Its geometry is selected for the component’s material and thickness, with a head suited to the assembly finish.
Technical features
ISO 1478 defines tapping screw threads. ISO 2702 covers properties of heat-treated steel tapping screws. Head, point and coating depend on the configuration.
Applications and assembly
Used in sheet metal, housings and certain plastics. Pilot-hole diameter directly affects retention and driving effort. This should not be confused with the drill point on a self-drilling screw.
