Hex Bolt Grade 5 – SAE J429
The SAE grade 5 hex bolt is made from quenched and tempered carbon steel for machinery, equipment and automotive assemblies. SAE J429 establishes its mechanical properties. It is used with compatible-grade nuts and inch-series threads, selecting UNC or UNF to match the connection.

The grade 5 hex bolt provides removable connections for machinery, equipment and automotive assemblies. Its six-sided head is accessible with standard inch-series tools.
Technical features
SAE J429 grade 5: ¼–1-inch diameters require minimum tensile and yield strengths of 120 and 92 ksi. Above 1 through 1½ inches, minima are 105 and 81 ksi. Three radial grade lines identify the head. Dimensions follow ASME B18.2.1 and threads ASME B1.1.
Applications and assembly
Nuts are selected to SAE J995 and the assembly strength requirement. Tightening must account for lubrication, coating and diameter. A SAE grade is not equivalent to a metric class with the same number and does not identify stainless steel.
